The benefits of an integrated backup and malware solution

There’s a new and very modern addition to the list of plagues in the Bible (locusts, flies, frogs… etc., etc.) that’s driving companies and individuals around the world to despair, and it’s called Ransomware.

When a ransomware attack blocks access to the entire system or encrypts irreplaceable data, the response is invariably one of profound shock. And many of the companies or end users involved can only see one way out – to pay out significant sums in ransom.

If they have a high-performance backup solution in place, they might have a more relaxed response, as they assume they can use the latest backup to restore their data and simply ignore any ransom demands. Unfortunately this rather complacent approach isn’t always justified.

Why backups don’t provide sufficient protection
Running a high-performance backup solution is highly recommended, but it certainly doesn’t provide complete protection against the dramatic consequences of a ransomware cyberattack. First of all, it has a significant dampening effect on live operations until all the files affected are restored – and the direct and indirect costs of this can be considerable.

Secondly, increasingly sophisticated versions of ransomware are directly targeting the backups themselves, corrupting or even completely deleting them. They also have another trick: Since data backups are less likely to be monitored than live files, they are sometimes used by cybercriminals as a “hiding place” for malware, timed to kick in later on when you’re least expecting it.

So keeping your backups up to date doesn’t mean you can simply shrug off cyberattacks. For truly complete protection you need a solution that immediately identifies and effectively prevents these attacks, extending a protective shield across the entire system infrastructure.

Optimum protection: Don’t combine, integrate.
But relying on products from two different providers to achieve this combination of backup software and antimalware is only the second-best solution. This kind of heterogeneous setup introduces the risk of incompatibilities, and the entirely different application logic means it’s anything but user-friendly. And budget holders will not be very impressed when they add up the costs of the two systems.

An integrated solution like Acronis Cyber Protect that combines antimalware and high-performance backup avoids all these disadvantages. It just takes a few clicks to set up, with perfectly coordinated functionalities managed and controlled from a single user interface. With its “set and forget” logic, this unique solution – available in Enterprise versions as Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office as well as a version customised to the end user requirements profiles – guarantees maximum protection against malicious attacks, whilst keeping administrative and time costs to a minimum.
